Mike Wazowski by Dan LuVisi

Will Strike Fear 4 Beer!

Californian concept artist Dan LuVisi has released a new twisted pop culture illustration portraying Mike Wazowski, an animated character from Monsters, Inc., as a blind and utterly devastated vagabond hiding out on Earth. Previously we wrote about Dan and his ongoing series of pop culture illustrations, which includes Bert and Ernie as dirty thugs and realistic human version of Buzz Lightyear.

Here is the first half of Dan’s dark story for Mike Wazowski:

After Boo was saved, Sully and Mike realized they no longer required scares for cash, thus forcing Mike into a new line of business; comedy.

As Mike continued his stand-up routine with the children in hopes for laughs, Sully partied and wasted money that he didn’t have. The problem is: the world didn’t care, it was Sully, a hero and role model. And everyone loves Sully. Everyone but the one living in his shadow.

Mike was tired of it. Tired of lowering himself to telling jokes, only to hurt himself in the process over, and over again. Mike decided to have a talk with Sully about it, but was continuously avoided. Angered, Mike followed Sully one day, only to realize he was headed for the home of Mike’s girlfriend, Celia.

Mike rushed home, shocked to find the two talking. His anger got the best of him and he attacked Sully. Out of defense, Sully struck Mike, catching his one-eye. Out of confusion and anger, Mike launched his nimble body into Sully, peircing him with his horns, killing him.

As Sully laid dead on the floor, Celia screamed, blaming Mike for the death of him… (read more)

Helicopter Tour of New York City

Statue of Liberty

While visiting New York City for Internet Week New York and the Webby Awards ceremony, I took an amazing helicopter tour of Manhattan and surrounding areas through Helicopter Flight Services. The tour takes off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, is about 15 minutes long, and is worth every penny.

Here’s some photos and videos I shot during the tour (was a very hot and hazy day):

Trakline is a clever men’s belt that replaces traditional belt holes with a much more adjustable track system. Hidden on the back of the belt, the track system offers 40 sizing positions in 1/4 inch increments (most belts have 5 belt holes spaced 1 inch apart). The belt’s creator, Karl Kozak, is raising funds for the project on Kickstarter. A women’s belt is also in the works.

Adventure Time Vinyl Figures

ThinkGeek released a stylized series of vinyl Adventure Time figures based on popular characters from the animated TV series (Finn, Jake, Lumpy Space Princess, Ice King and Marceline). Each figure is available to purchase online.

Each one of these Adventure Time Vinyl Figures is a pint-sized figure of algebraic awesomeness. From Jake’s wavy arms to Finn’s toothy smile to LSP’s attitude, the character of each character shines through in the sculpt. We’ve arranged little scenes on our desk: Jake and Finn talk to LSP on one side, while Marceline tries to get Ice King to remember on the other. With Adventure Time Vinyl Figures, the fun truly never ends.

Full Scale Lego X-Wing

LEGO has taken custom model building to the next level with their incredible life-size model of a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter that is built out of 5,335,200 LEGO bricks. Gizmodo reports that “it reproduces the official $60 Lego 9493 X-Wing Fighter. But instead of being 560-pieces and a few inches long, this model uses more than five million pieces and it’s 11-feet tall and 43 feet long, with a 44-foot wingspan. Just like the real X-Wing—and 42 times the size of the commercial Lego set.” It took 32 Master LEGO builders approximately 4 months to build it to completion. LEGO unveiled this behemoth at Time Square in New York City. It will be on display there during the Memorial Day weekend then be moved to the West Coast. If the size alone wasn’t enough, the X-Wing also has a custom built R2-D2 and noisy engines that glow red just like in the films. You can learn more, view more photos and video footage at Gizmodo.

According to Gizmodo:

The model was created to promote the original Lego Star Wars animation TV series ‘The Yoda Chronicles,’ which will premiere on Cartoon Network on Wednesday, May 29 at 8:00PM.

Here is a video from the folks at Yoda’s News showing off the LEGO X-Wing. You can watch it being fired up at the 5 minute mark of the video.
